Big first half powers Presidents past Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team improved to 11-1 overall on the season with a 5-1 road win at Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday night, Oct. 11.

Kelly Knisel (Weatogue, Conn./Simsbury) started the scoring for the Presidents in the 12th minute when she finished an open shot coming from a pass by Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Four minutes later, Steffey scored when she was able to gather a rebounded defensive save in the box. Laura O'Malley (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) then tacked on her second goal of the year in the 18th minute to give W&J a 3-0 lead as Steffey assisted again.

O'Malley struck again in the 27th minute, this time by redirecting a shot by Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi) off the left post and in. Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) tacked on the fifth and final President goal in the 32nd minute when she passed to Steffey on a penalty corner opportunity who then passed back to Buyan for the finish to the right post. With the assist, Steffey passed Erin Barno (2009-12) and Kolbey Seidel (2007-10) for the program record for career assists (22).

The Presidents yielded a goal to the Battling Bishops in the 49th minute, but played lockdown defense to prevent any more scores.

Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) (11-1) earned the win for the Presidents. Jackie Feliciano (5-8) took the loss for the Battling Bishops, making three saves.

The Presidents outshot the Battling Bishops 17-4 and held an 8-1 edge in shots on goal.

W&J returns to the field on Saturday, Oct. 15, when it hosts St. John Fisher in a 1 p.m. Empire 8 matchup.
