WASHINGTON, Pa. -- St. John Fisher scored with 8:19 remaining in the second overtime to pull out a 1-0 win over Washington & Jefferson in an Empire 8 field hockey matchup with potential conference tournament ramifications.
Kelly Bergamo scored her eighth of the season off a cross from Emily Markarian to give the Cardinals the victory and keep them undefeated in E8 play at 6-0. SJFC also improves to 12-2 overall, with W&J slipping to 11-2 on the year and 4-2 in the league.
W&J had multiple chances in regulation and overtime, the best ones coming near the end of the first OT and during the second extra frame when SJFC's Sarah Bisesi knocked down a shot off the stick of
Judy Yurkofsky (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) at the goal line to keep the game scoreless.
Behind an 8-1 advantage in the second overtime, W&J held a 19-11 overall lead in shots.
Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) led all players with six shots, including five on goal, while
Laura O'Malley (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) and Yurkofsky both tallied four shots.
Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) made five saves, with O'Malley and
Claire Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) both adding defensive saves. SJFC's Ashley Maynard made 10 saves in the winning effort.
W&J will have a quick turn around, hosting Concordia (Wis.) on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m.
