WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson rebounded from a double overtime conference loss to post a 5-2 nonconference victory over Concordia Wisconsin at Cameron Stadium.
The victory improves the Presidents' field hockey team to 12-2 on the year. The Falcons, who are in their first year as a program and are the only NCAA Division III field hockey team in the state of Wisconsin, drop to 5-8 in their inaugural campaign.
Judy Yurkofsky (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) opened the scoring with her eighth goal of the season 23:11 into play.
Kelly Knisel (Weatogue, Conn./Simsbury) gave W&J a 2-0 lead heading into halftime as she recorded her first goal of the game and eighth of the season with 1:03 remaining in the opening period. Her score was a deflection to the lower right corner off an assist by
Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford), who earlier in the week became W&J's career assists leader.
It took the Presidents only 1:19 into the second half to build the lead to 3-0 as Knisel assisted on
Rachel Buyan's (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) ninth goal of the year which came off of a double deflection inside the far post. Buyan would add her second goal of the game and reach double figures for the season 5:23 later when she stepped in after entering a penalty corner and drilled home a one-timer off a pass from
Laura O'Malley (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East).
Knisel's second goal of the game, also assisted by Steffey, was sandwiched between a pair of CUW scores. Knisel's ninth goal this year came as she finished a slow trickle shot that had gotten behind the Falcons' goalkeeper at 54:34.
Thanks to a 13-3 advantage in the first half, W&J held a 20-10 lead in shots for the game and 14-6 in shots on goal. Knisel and O'Malley each tied for the game high with four shots, while Buyan,
Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and Steffey each had three shots.
Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) improved to 12-2 on the season and 16-3 in her career by making three saves in 70 minutes.
Alex Raulin (Columbia, Md./Atholton) recorded a defensive save with 30 seconds remaining to keep CUW at two goals.
W&J travels to Oberlin (Ohio)Â for a 6 p.m. nonconference match against the Yeowomen on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
