OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team concluded the nonconference portion of its 2016 schedule with a 3-0 win at Oberlin.
The victory means that the Presidents finished the regular season undefeated in out-of-league regular season games for the first time in program history, wrapping up those contests with a 9-0 record and out-scoring their opponents 32-7. It was also the seventh shutout of the year for W&J, which ties the 2007 Empire 8 championship and NCAA qualifying team for the most all-time.Â
Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) picked up the shutout, also her seventh of the season, to match Ashley Rund's mark of seven from the 2007 team. Baran did not need to make a save against the Yeowomen as the Presidents' defense surrendered just three shots, none of which made it on goal.
Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) snapped a seven game stretch without a goal by opening the scoring 8:54 into the second half with her third game-winning goal of the season thanks to an assist by
Claire Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County). The Presidents needed just 2:26 to tack on another goal, this time
Kelly Knisel's (Weatogue, Conn./Simsbury) 10th of the season off an assist by
Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). It was Knisel's fourth goal in the last four matches, all of which have been assisted by Steffey. The helper was Steffey's 11th of the season, which breaks the W&J single-season mark of 10 that had previously been shared by Hannah Lott and Amanda Pflumm in 2011.
Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) then broke the three-way tie atop the W&J goals list with her team-leading 11th of the year when she flung in a put-back attempt at 62:00.
W&J totaled 26 shots, with 18 hitting the target. Steffey posted seven of them, while
Laura O'Malley (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) added five and Fromm and Knisel both recorded four.
The Presidents will play their final regular season road match on Saturday, Oct. 22, a 1 p.m. Empire 8 contest at Ithaca (N.Y.).
