Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Presidents' historic start continues with 5-0 win over Frostburg State

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team won its 10th straight game, tying the program record set in 2007, while also extending the program record for best start to a season (10-0) in its 5-0 win over Frostburg State on Wednesday night, Oct. 5.

Just 51 seconds into the game, Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) found Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) on a pass sent through the Bobcats' defense. Steffey one-timed her shot into the cage for her eighth score of the season.
Nearly nine minutes later, Buyan got on the board with her seventh goal of the season when she redirected a shot by Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi) following a penalty corner opportunity.
In the 24th minute, Kelly Knisel (Weatogue, Conn./Simsbury) controlled a loose ball, spun around a defender and finished for her sixth goal of the season.
Less than three minutes later, Steffey scored again as she was able to find space in the box after dribbling through the defense, giving the Presidents a 4-0 lead heading into halftime. The goal marked Steffey's second five-point performance in the last three games and was the 43rd of her career, moving her into second place on the W&J career goals list, passing Beth Kelley (2004-07).
Judy Yurkofsky (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) rounded out the scoring for the Presidents with her seventh goal of the season in the 52nd minute after she was able to corral a loose ball in the box and send it to the back of the cage.
Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) (10-0) earned the win and extended her scoreless streak to 371:37 with her fifth consecutive shutout, and sixth in the last seven games, as she made one save in the game. Kelsey Bowman (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) came up with a defensive save on the final play of the game. Jacqueline Gover (5-6) took the loss in net for the Bobcats, making four saves in 24:33. Nicole Leighty came on to finish the game for the Bobcats and made seven saves.

The Presidents' defense stifled the Bobcats offense, giving up just two shots in the game while the offense took 22 shots and put 18 on goal.

W&J returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8, when it travels to Houghton (N.Y.) for an 11:30 a.m. Empire 8 matchup.
