W&J uses four first half goals to fly past Geneva, 7-1

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team improved to 8-3-2 overall on the season and 2-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a 7-1 victory over Geneva (3-7, 0-3 PAC) on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Ashton Grimm (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville/Saint Francis (Pa.)) and Jordan Toohey (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant/Saint Francis (Pa.)) both recorded hat tricks in the game to lead the Presidents' offense. Grimm's hat trick was the first of her career while Toohey's was the seventh of her career and her third this season.

Grimm opened the scoring in the game in the seventh minute when she was able to one-touch a ball in mid-air for the score. Five minutes later, Brianna Floryshak (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) sent a pass through the defense for Toohey, who finished to the left side of the goal. Tatiana Ruzzini (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) extended the lead to 3-0 in the 17th minute when she corraled a rebounded save from her initial shot and scored on an empty net with the keeper out of position. Grimm scored her second goal in the 31st minute on a header off a pass from the right sideline from Ruzzini as the Presidents went into halftime with a 4-0 lead.

Toohey got her second goal of the game in the 50th minute after racing past a defender and beat the keeper to her right. Three minutes later, Grimm finished her hat trick by heading in a cross off a corner taken by Chandler Marteeny (Somerset, Pa./Somerset), Grimm's seventh goal of the season and Marteeny's third assist. In the 59th minute, Toohey completed her hat trick after beating another defender on the right side and firing a shot just inside the left post for her 13th goal of the season.

The Golden Tornadoes got on the board in the 90th minute thanks to Sarah Foy who kicked in a loose ball in the box following a corner kick.

Allison Rinehimer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) (6-3-2) got the win in net for the Presidents, making one save in the first half. Beth Boyles (Dundee, Ohio/Hiland) played the second half in goal for the Presidents. Danielle Lincoln (2-6) took the loss in net for the Golden Tornadoes, making five saves in the first half.
