WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team defeated Allegheny, 82-56, on Tuesday night, Nov. 22.
With the game tied, 5-5, in the first quarter, the Presidents used an 11-0 run to build a strong lead, making all three shots, including a three-pointer, and four free throws. The Presidents defense held strong in the second quarter, limiting the Gators to just five points on 2-of-19 shooting (.105) while the offense scored 21 points as the Presidents took a 42-19 lead into halftime.
W&J held a 40-37 second half advantage to yield the final margin.Â
Taylor Cortazzo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) led all scorers in the game with 14 points as she hit 4-of-8 shots from the field in addition to 5-of-6 shots from the charity stripe to go along with four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) recorded her second career double-double, finishing with 12 points and 12 boards in addition to two blocks and five steals.
Amirah Moore (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) and
Danni Medovich (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) both recorded 10 points as Moore shot 4-of-8 from the field with five rebounds and three assists while Medovich shot 4-of-9 from the field, including 2-of-2 from long range, to go along with three rebounds and a block.
Mya Gordon (Washington, Pa./Washington) pulled in seven rebounds and came away with three steals in the game.
The W&J defense held the Gators' offense to just 12.2-percent shooting in the first half, including 7.4-percent from inside the three-point arc. For the game, the Presidents held advantages in points in the paint (36-14) and points off turnovers (27-8) while forcing 22 turnovers.
The Presidents will return to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 30, when they host Geneva in the first Presidents' Athletic Conference game of the season at 6 p.m.
