WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Junior
Mya Gordon (Washington, Pa./Washington) recorded her first career double-double as the Presidents breezed past Geneva, 88-53, in the 2016-17 Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's Basketball opener.
Washington & Jefferson improves to 3-1 on the season and opens 1-0 in league play. Geneva drops to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the PAC.
Over a 3:34 near the end of the first quarter, W&J used a 15-0 run to open the game and a 27-9 lead.
Mia Woytovich (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) hit a pair of three-pointers at the end of the run, after assisting on the previous three buckets, a
Rachel Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) layup and a jumper and triple from
Taylor Cortazzo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford).
The second quarter was much of the same, as W&J outscored Geneva, 20-7, and ceded just one field goal in the period (1-of-14, 7.1 percent), as W&J cruised to the 47-18 halftime lead before the eventual 35-point final margin.
Gordon led all players with career highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds, shooting 8-of-14 from the field and hauling in eight offensive boards. In the process, she also went over 100 rebounds for her career.Â
Taley Dunaway (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) also recorded a career high with 13 points.
Amirah Moore (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) reached double figures at 10 points to go along with a game-high six assists.
Cortazzo added eight points, with
Nicole Ricketts (Montgomery Village, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) chipping in seven points. Woytovich filled the stat line with six points, seven rebounds and five assists in just 12 minutes before fouling out.
W&J doubled up Geneva in rebounding, pulling down 72 rebounds compared to 35. The Presidents had nearly as many offensive boards (34) and total boards for the GTs (35). The defense also held Geneva to just 25.8 percent (16-of-62) from the floor and 15.0 percent (3-of-20) from beyond-the-arc.
In the paint, W&J boasted a 46-22 advantage, while leading in points off turnovers (16-8), second-chance points (29-6), fast-break points (10-0) and bench points (44-18).
The Presidents continue PAC play on Saturday, Dec. 3 when they travel to Latrobe, Pa., for a 4 p.m. tip-off at Saint Vincent.
