Defensive effort leads W&J past Saint Benedict (Minn.), 58-43

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Washington & Jefferson held the College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) to 26 points over the final 30 minutes in a 58-43 win in the consolation game of the Jamie Lynn Roberts-Fairfield Inn DC Holiday Tournament, hosted by the Catholic University of America.

The Presidents improve to 6-4 on the season after concluding nonconference play for the year. The Blazers, who opened the year 7-0 and compete in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, fall to 7-4 on the season.

W&J trailed, 17-13, after 10 minutes of play, but allowed just four points in the second quarter to take a 27-21 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Presidents outscored the Blazers, 31-22, to yield the final margin.

The Presidents held CSB to just 27.8 percent (15-of-54) from the floor and 18.2 percent (4-of-22) from beyond-the-arc for the game.

Taylor Cortazzo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) made a three-pointer as part of her eight points on the day, the 100th made triple of her career. Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led all players with 19 points on 7-of-14 from the floor and a pair of made three-pointers. She was also tied with Danni Medovich (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) for the team lead with eight rebounds.

Mia Woytovich (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) made 4-of-6 shots from the floor for nine points to go with five rebounds and two steals.

W&J returns to league play for the remainder of the regular season when it travels to Grove City for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
