Presidents' rally falls short against Carnegie Mellon

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 68-66 loss to No. 13 Carnegie Mellon on Tuesday night, Dec. 6.
 
Trailing 43-33 with 7:18 remaining in the third quarter, the Presidents' (4-2) shooters began to heat up, outscoring the Tartans (7-0) 22-7 over the next 5:27 to take a 53-50 lead. The Presidents made 9-of-12 shots from the field, and 4-of-5 from long range, while limiting the Tartans to just 2-for-5 shooting over that stretch.
 
The Tartans countered the W&J run with five straight free throws to regain a two-point lead, 55-53, as both teams went on to exchange 13 points the rest of the way.
 
After being outscored 23-10 in the first quarter, the Presidents were able to gain some ground in the second quarter, but still trailed 40-31 at the half.
 
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) scored a team-high 17 points on 50 percent shooting from the field, including 3-for-5 from long range, and also had nine points during the 22-7 run in the middle of the third. Parker also pulled in three boards, dished out two assists, blocked a shot and recorded three steals.
 
Amirah Moore (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) scored 14 in the game to go along with five rebounds, four assists and three steals while Danni Medovich (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) tallied 12 points and connected on two of her three long range attempts.
 
Taley Dunaway (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) provided a solid effort off the bench, scoring 10 points and hitting two triples.
 
The Presidents' defense stepped up in the second half, holding the Tartans to just 36.4 percent shooting from the field. For the game, the Presidents held advantages in points in the paint (22-16), points off turnovers (18-7) and second chance points (11-5) in addition to winning the turnover battle (19-9).
 
The Presidents will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 10, when they return to Presidents' Athletic Conference action against Westminster at 1 p.m.
