Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

W&J tops La Roche in early season shootout, 16-13

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team got hat tricks from three different players in a 16-13 nonconference win at La Roche.

With the win, the Presidents move to an even 1-1 on the season heading into Saturday afternoon's home opener against Baldwin Wallace. Faceoff in that match is slated for 4 p.m. at Alexandre Stadium. The Redhawks drop to 0-2 on the year following the loss.

After La Roche got on the board first just 2:09 into the game, W&J responded with three straight goals, two from Kyle Heinig and one from Zach Fredericks. The Redhawks got within one at the 4:00-mark of the first quarter, but the two teams finished the first 15 minutes with W&J holding a 3-2 lead.

LRC tied the match 37 seconds into the second frame, but two Heinig goals put the Presidents ahead for good. After a La Roche score made it 5-4, Devon Curran registered a pair of goals, his first of the season, to open up a 7-4 advantage. With the score 7-5 and under three minutes to play in the first half, W&J began a run that featured a President scoring six of the next seven goals to close out the third quarter with a 13-6 lead. Heinig again scored a pair during the streak, while Fredericks finished twice as well and Ryan Quan and Bryan Whipkey also got in on the action.

The Redhawks would not go down without a fight, however, as they scored the first six goals of the fourth quarter and just like that the score was 13-12 with seven minutes to play in regulation. Fredericks found Heinig for his career-high seventh goal of the game to stop the run and a Curran goal (assisted by Whipkey) gave W&J a three-goal margin back. Matt Densford notched the final marker of the game for his first career goal.

For the game, W&J held a 44-40 upper hand in shots and 29-24 in shots on goal. The Presidents were successful on 17-of-22 clear attempts and 3-of-6 extra man opportunities. La Roche held a slight, 43-38, advantage in ground balls, but committed more turnovers, 26-22.

Aside from being a career high and the highest individual total in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference this season, Heinig's seven goals represented the 11th hat trick and 16th multi-goal game of his career. With an assist he totaled eight points, also representing a career best, topping his previous high of six against Franciscan in 2014.

Fredericks finished with his fourth career hat trick and 14th multi-goal game as he collected three goals and four assists, establishing a new high mark for his career with seven points. The hat trick for Curran was the first of his time as a President and was the third multi-goal game for the junior.

Quan matched his career benchmark with 13 face-off wins, claiming 13-of-28 opportunities and picking up a team- and career-high 10 ground balls. Joseph Tritschler caused five turnovers in his second collegiate game, most between the two teams.

Jacob Succop made 11 saves on the day to earn his first victory of the 2016 campaign and eighth overall.
