W&J drops first-ever ORLC match to Hanover, 11-10

By Anthony Socrates, Sports Information Intern

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Three Presidents produced multiple goals in a losing effort as Washington & Jefferson fell to Hanover, 11-10, in the men's lacrosse team's first Ohio River Lacrosse Conference match at Alexandre Stadium.

Devon Curran had a game-high four goals to improve his season total to nine.  Zach Fredericks tallied three goals, while Matt Densford netted two of his own.

The Presidents kicked off the first quarter with Curran recording a hat trick in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Panthers answered quickly by ending the quarter with two goals to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.

Hanover controlled the majority of the second quarter by accumulating four goals to W&J's one which put the visitors up 6-4 at the half.

The second half opened up with Curran's fourth score of the game, pulling the Presidents within one goal of the Panthers, 6-5. After two consecutive Hanover goals, Fredericks netted one with 50 second left in the third and then another within the first 40 seconds of the fourth to keep the game in reach at 8-7.

Hanover went on to score back-to-back goals later in the fourth to improve their lead to 10-7. However, the Presidents once again brought the game back within one score, 10-9, thanks to Fredericks' third goal of the game and Bryan Whipkey adding the other score.

Later in the quarter, the Panthers would register another tally to move the count to 11-9. With three minutes left in the game the Presidents proved their resilience with Densford's second of the game. In the closing seconds of the fourth, W&J pushed the pace and got a great opportunity to score with one second left.  The shot just missed the net going wide leaving the score in favor of Hanover 11-10.

Goalkeeper Jacob Succop recorded 16 saves on 27 shots on goal in the loss, while the Panthers' goalkeeper, Jake Glass, got the win. The Presidents move to 1-6 on the year and 0-1 in the ORLC while Hanover goes to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

W&J is slated to play its next game at Goucher (Md.) on Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m.
