CLERMONT, Fla. – Splitting the second day in Florida, Washington & Jefferson opened the day with a 4-1 loss to Allegheny but wrapped up by securing the first win of the season with a 4-2 victory over Scranton.
All four of the Presidents' runs against Scranton were tallied consecutively in the bottom of the third.
Rachel Marx scored thanks to a single hit to left field by
Abby Cunningham. Shortly after,
Morgan Figura found home, followed by a double hit by Logan Woodley to center field to bring in a run by Cunningham.
Scranton attempted to recover with two runs of its own at the top of the sixth, but W&J was able to retain the lead, winning 4-2.
Krista McCartney led the Presidents on the mound for the second game, pitching all seven innings but only allowing six hits and the two earned runs.
In the first game,
Taylor Andres and
Emily Watson split time pitching, with Andres throwing the first four innings and Watson closing the final three, prohibiting any hits or runs and only allowing one walk in 44 pitches.
Allegheny brought in all four of its runs in the top of the second, taking a 4-0 lead. W&J saw
Meghan Staab score in the bottom of the third, but the effort was not enough to overtake the Gators.
The Presidents will return to action for their third day in Florida tomorrow, March 21st, in a 9:00 am matchup against Hope (Mich.) and an 11:00 am game versus Stevens (N.J.).Â
