AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- No. 24 Wisconsin-Stevens Point scored 11 runs in the first three innings to earn a 12-1 win over Washington & Jefferson at Lake Myrtle Park.
The Presidents finish their Florida trip with an even 3-3 record and move to 5-5 overall on the season. The Pointers improve to 2-4 this year.
Serving as the visitors, UWSP plated two runs in the first and second innings to open up a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the second.
W&J got on the board in its at bat with a run.
Jake Gordon singled to short and advanced to second on a throwing error. With one out,
Nick Gatins also registered an infield single, putting runners on the corners, when
Kevin Begley tallied the third infield single of the inning for W&J with two outs, which plated Gordon.
The top of the third saw the Pointers cross the plate seven times to stretch the lead to 11-1, before adding a single score in the top of the seventh for the eventual 12-1 final.
Riley Groves suffered the loss to drop to 1-2 this year, working 2.1 innings and surrendering 10 hits, 10 runs (eight earned) with a walk.
Bryce Schnatterly worked a successful 3.2 innings of relief, scattering five hits and an earned run with four strike outs and five ground outs.
Matt Heslin pitched the final inning and gave up an earned run on two hits with a strike out and hit batter.
W&J will return back to Pennsylvania with its next game scheduled to conclude the season series with Grove City in Mercer County on Weds., March 30 at 4:30 p.m. The two teams split a doubleheader to open the season.
