W&J finishes 2016 Florida action

CLERMONT, Fla. – Washington & Jefferson's softball showing in Florida came to a close with a 7-6 loss to Benedictine (Ill.), who was picked to finish second in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Coaches' Preseason Poll, and an 8-2 dropped decision to University of Saint Thomas (Minn.), voted to finish first in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coaches' Preseason Poll.

Six Presidents were able to score runs in the first matchup of the day. Rachel Marx was on the board first following a single to left field by Emily Watson. W&J then moved the score to 2-0 with a run by Ally Doty batted in by Marx. In the top of the third inning, the Presidents reached home four times. Watson ran in first, thanks to a single down the right field line by Taylor Andres. Then, a double hit to left center by Doty brought in Nicole Ashcraft, Andres and Logann Woodley. The bottom of the fifth saw Benedictine tie the game, with the Eagles pulling ahead, 7-6, in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Marx and Doty once again tallied runs, this time in the second game of the day against University of Saint Thomas. The pair of scores happened in the top of the third inning when Marx singled to center field, but an error by the catcher allowed Doty to run in from second and Marx to round the final two bases.

Next, the Presidents will travel to Greensburg, Pa. to compete against Pitt-Greensburg in a doubleheader on March 31st at 3:30 pm and 6:00 pm.
