Presidents earn wire-to-wire win at Saint Vincent, 10-5

LATROBE, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson scored seven combined goals in the first and fourth quarters en route to a 10-5 Ohio River Lacrosse Conference victory at Saint Vincent.

With the win, the Presidents pull even in the ORLC at 2-2 after opening conference play with a pair of one-goal losses. The Bearcats drop even to 2-2 in the league.

Kyle MacKenzie opened the scoring at the 8:41 mark of the first quarter, and Devon Curran added a man-up goal at 6:32 to push the score to 2-0. Both goals were assisted by Kyle Heinig. Curran added an even-strength goal 1:32 later, assisted by Bryan Whipkey, and Whipkey got in on the act just 50 seconds later, at 4:10, with a man-up goal from Zach Fredericks, 4-0.

The home team pulled to within 5-2 at halftime, with Curran's third goal of the game the lone blow for the Presidents in the second quarter.

After SVC tallied three of the five third-quarter goals, W&J held a 7-5 lead after 45 minutes. Heinig opened the period with his 32nd of the season, and later assisted on Fredericks' man-up goal at 4:54 of the quarter.

The fourth quarter scoring was all Presidents as Heinig found the back of the net for the second time 1:37 into the frame, and Curran added his fourth and fifth tallies 12 seconds apart, with assists to Heinig and Rocco Ruscitto, at 8:30 and 8:18, respectively.

Curran's five goals establish a new career high, while Heinig's four assists are a career best. Fredericks and Whipkey each added a goal and an assist in the win.

W&J scored on three of its four extra-man opportunities, while also winning 15-of-18 faceoffs, all of which were taken by Ryan Quan. The 15 faceoff wins set a new career-best for the senior, who currently sits fourth on the W&J career list with 243 faceoff victories. His game-high 13 ground balls also set a new career-best.

Heinig recorded six shots in the game to move into third on the single-season list at 110 this year, while also improving to third in program history with 313.

Jacob Succop made 10 saves in the victory, the 10th of his career. The 10 saves pushed him over 500 for his career, making him just the second President goalie to eclipse 500 career saves, joining saves leader Ran Kirby ('13), who leads with 645. Succop already owns the single-season save mark with 228 last season, and his 189 already in 2016 rank third.

The Presidents will remain on the road for their next match, a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, April 16 at ORLC foe Defiance.
