Game Recap: Softball |

Homerun by Jamie Smith leads to W&J split at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson women's softball split a doubleheader at Saint Vincent, winning the first game 1-0 and falling 2-1 in the second of the day. With the win and the loss the Presidents move to 5-13 on the season and 2-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).

The win for W&J came when Jamie Smith hit her first homerun of the season.

Krista McCartney was in the circle for the full seven innings of the first game, earning her first shutout of the season and ninth of her career by sacrificing only four hits and one walk in 24 at bats.

The Bearcats struck first in the second game of the day, hitting a homer at the bottom of the second inning to make it 1-0. The Presidents responded at the top of the third when Abby Cunningham scored thanks to a single to center field by Logan Woodley. Saint Vincent secured the win after a single to center field batted a runner in at the bottom of the sixth.

Taylor Andres was the starting pitcher for the second game, giving up only three hits with no walks in five innings.

The Presidents will return the field tomorrow, April 14 at 3:30 pm when they host Geneva in a PAC doubleheader.
