ERIE, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson split at Penn State Behrend in a nonconference doubleheader, earning a 3-2 win in the first game of the twin bill and a falling 5-4 in the second after eight innings.
The Lions struck first, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. W&J responded shortly after, in the top of the second, when
Ally Doty doubled to left field bringing
Nicole Ashcraft and
Logann Woodley in to tie the game, 2-2.
The third, fourth, fifth and six innings remained scoreless for both teams, but an inside-the-park homer by
Meghan Staab at the top of the seventh broke the tie giving the Presidents the 3-2 win.
Krista McCartney pitched the full seven innings, allowing only one earned run while throwing two strikeouts.
W&J kicked off the second game with two runs in the top of the first inning after Woodley doubled down the left field line to bat in
Abby Cunningham and
Rachel Marx.
The game once again remained scoreless until Penn State Behrend grounded out to second base and advanced a runner home, bringing the score to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
At the top of the sixth,
Emily Watson doubled to center field helping Cunningham to score. W&J scored once more at the top of the seventh when Ashcraft reached home following an RBI ground out ball hit by Staab.
In the bottom of the seventh, Penn State Behrend scored three times, tying the game at 4-4 and sending it into extra innings.
W&J was unable to find momentum in the top of the eighth, while the Lions captured the final run in the bottom of the inning to take the game, 5-4.
Taylor Andres was in the circle for six of the eight innings of the second game, yielding four earned runs and a walk while throwing six strikeouts. Watson came in to get the final three outs of the seventh inning, but was in the circle for the winning run of the eighth.
The Presidents will return home for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against Grove City on April 19, with the first game set to start at 3:30 pm.
