WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson topped Grove City in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader, winning 8-0 in six innings followed by a 9-1 victory in five innings. The wins bring the Presidents' record to 12-14 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
W&J kicked off scoring in the bottom of the third when
Rachel Marx singled to the right field, advancing
Meghan Staab to third where she continued to score on an error. Marx went on to score following an at bat by
Morgan Figura and an error by the shortstop, landing the score at 2-0.
The margin was increased when
Ally Doty singled through the left side to help bring
Jamie Smith home in the bottom of the fourth. Â
The Presidents posted five runs in the bottom of the sixth. With bases loaded, a hit from Staab brought Smith in to score. Following a single by Marx, Figura singled to center field allowing
Ally Doty and
Krista McCartney to come home. With the next at bat, Cunningham singled to center field, allowing Marx to score. W&J ended the game after
Emily Watson singled up the middle, batting in Figura.
McCartney was in the circle for her third shutout of the season, allowing only one walk while throwing a pair of strikeouts.
A run from Figura batted in by
Logann Woodley, followed by Woodley coming home thanks to
Taylor Andres, led to a 2-0 lead in favor of W&J in the bottom of the first of the second game.
The Presidents increased their margin when Marx tripled to right center, bringing in Staab to score.
W&J tallied a trio of runs in the bottom of the third inning when Cunningham scored from a hit by Smith, Watson captured a run on an error by the shortstop and Staab tripled to left field for Doty to score.
The score advanced to 9-0 when, in the bottom of the fourth,
Taylor Andres doubled to center field, bringing in Watson and Figura.
Grove City came on the board in the top of the fifth, but could not recover, ending the game at 9-1.
Andres pitched for the full five innings of the second game, throwing six strikeouts and no walks.
The Presidents will return to action when they travel to Crestview Hills, Ky. on April 23 to faceoff against Thomas More in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.Â
