WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson dropped both ends of a pivotal Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against Waynesburg, 2-0 and 2-1.
The losses move W&J to 14-13 overall and Waynesburg to 10-18, while the two squads have identical 8-6 PAC records, currently good for fourth in the league. The Yellow Jackets have already clinched the season series ahead of tomorrow's nine-inning wrap-up, which is slated for 4:30 p.m. in Waynesburg.
Frank Fortunato had his third multi-hit game in a row, and eighth overall this season, in the opener as he notched a pair of hits.
Derek Helbing,
Dan Trettel and
Nick Vento registered the remaining three hits the Presidents earned against Waynesburg starter Luke Carter.
Joe Vita (2-2) suffered the loss in the opener, giving up just one earned run in 6.0 innings, with four strikeouts (three looking) and two walks (both intentional).
Tim Mulvey surrendered an unearned run on one hit with a strikeout and walk in working the seventh inning.
After falling behind 2-0 in the second game, the Presidents tried to mount a rally when
Mark Merlino led off the bottom of the fifth with a book-rule double down the right-field line and a bunt single by
Kevin Begley put runners on the corners with no outs. With one out, pinch-runner
Mullen Socha stole second and
Adam LaRue delivered a sacrifice fly to left. Helbing was hit by a pitch to put the go-ahead run on base, but
Nick Vento flew out to deep right field to end the inning, 2-1.
Yellow Jackets' starter Derek Whalen was able to get W&J out 1-2-3 in the the sixth and seventh innings, finishing with a line of five hits, one run and two strikeouts with no walks in going the distance.
Nick Kolat(1-2) took the loss for the Presidents, giving up two runs (one earned) and six hits in 3.1 innings.
Matt Heslin worked the final 3.2 innings of one-hit baseball, striking out one and walking another, while getting nine ground outs and no fly outs.
