BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Geneva used four runs in the first three innings and a five spot in the seventh to down the Washington & Jefferson baseball team 9-4 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
The loss drops the Presidents to even overall (7-7), and in the PAC (3-3), after securing the season series with a doubleheader sweep of the Golden Tornadoes on Friday evening.
Andy Santana, who finished 5-for-5 on the day, figured in on the first three runs of the day for Geneva, with an RBI single in each of the first and third innings and scoring on a wild pitch in the first.
The Presidents began to battle back in the bottom of the sixth (W&J served as the home team after hosting Geneva as the visitor the night before) with three runs off the bat of
Frank Fortunato, who hit his second home run in as many days.
Derek Helbing reached on an error with one out and
Nick Vento singled, putting two men on and setting the table for Fortunato's three-run blast, 4-3.
The GTs responded with five runs off the W&J bullpen in the top of the fifth, however, to widen the lead to 9-3. A Helbing RBI single brought home
Luke Zahren in the bottom of the ninth for W&J's only run of the final three frames to make the final 9-4.
Helbing finished 2-for-3 on the day with a walk, run and RBI, while Fortunato drove in three. Vento,
Josh Crummer,
Zak Keesee and
Justin Zak each tallied base knocks for the Presidents.
Trevor Kerr (1-1) suffered the loss, surrendering six hits and four runs in 4.0 innings. He struck out two and walked one, getting six batters to ground out and four to fly out.
W&J will step out out of conference play for a single nine-inning game against Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday, April 5. First pitch at Ross Memorial Park is slated for 4:30 p.m.
