Presidents run winning streak to four at Westminster, 17-7

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson built an 11-2 lead in the first half and never looked back in a 17-7 Ohio River Lacrosse Conference victory at Westminster.

The win is the fourth straight for the Presidents, who improve to 5-10 overall and 4-2 in the ORLC. Both league losses have been by a single goal. The Titans fall to 2-6 overall and 1-6 in league matches.

W&J built a 6-0 lead in the first 12:37, as Bryan Whipkey and Zach Fredericks both tallied a pair of goals and Devon Curran and Kyle Heinig added a goal apiece.

In the second quarter, the Presidents used a 5-1 advantage thanks to a trio of scores from Curran, to build the halftime lead. Both Fredericks and Whipkey completed their hat tricks in the match during the second period.

Curran and Whipkey each found the back of the next in the third quarter, and a 4-3 showing in the fourth gave W&J the 17-7 win.

Whipkey finished with five goals for the second-straight game, with Curran matching him at five scores. Fredericks added four goals and two assists, with Heinig finding the back of the net twice and handing out three assists, and Matt Densford pitching in a goal and an assist.

Ryan Quan won 12-of-22 faceoffs and picked up a team-best eight ground balls. Heinig scooped five GBs and Joseph Tritschler added four. Michael Nejak led all players with four caused turnovers.

Jacob Succop played the whole match in goal, finishing with 11 saves in the victory.

W&J will wrap up the regular season and look to clinch a berth in the upcoming ORLC tournament when it hosts Bethany on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
