WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson split a nonconference doubleheader against Muskingum, with a 5-4 victory over the Fighting Muskies and then a 10-7 loss.
The first game of the day saw the Presidents facing a 3-0 deficit going into the bottom of the second inning, but a double to center field by
Rachel Marx brought
Meghan Staab,
Ally Doty and
Danielle Kochka home to score. W&J took the lead moments later when
Morgan Figura singled through the right side to plate Marx.
Muskingum answered at the top of the sixth to tie the game at 4-4 once again, but the Presidents came out on top in the bottom of the sixth when
Abby Cunningham singled to third base, allowing
Meghan Staab to score.
Krista McCartney pitched for six innings, sacrificing only three earned runs and one walk in the process.
The second game of the doubleheader opened with scoring from W&J in the bottom of the first when
Emily Watson doubled to left center and advanced to third on the throw, batting Cunningham and Marx in. In the top of the second inning, the Fighting Muskies scored six times to take the lead.
Staab had the lone run in the bottom of the second when she hit a homerun. Kochka assisted in decreasing the margin in the fourth inning when she doubled to left field to bring
Taylor Andres home. The Presidents tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when
Jamie Smith scored followed with a run by Doty.
In the top of the seventh Muskingum scored four more times, including a two run homer. Cunningham notched her own homerun in the bottom of the seventh, ending the game at 10-7
Emily Watson was the pitcher for W&J for 5.1 innings, throwing only one earned run and one walk with three strikeouts.
W&J will travel to Greenville, Pa. to take on Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader set to start at 3:00 pm.
