W&J scores extra-inning win over Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson softball team split in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Thiel, falling 1-0 in the first matchup of the day and then topping the Tomcats 10-9 after nine innings in game two.

In game one, both teams posted six hits but remained scoreless until a throwing error allowed Thiel to secure the lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Krista McCartney pitched for all six innings, throwing three strikeouts and only sacrificing one earned run and one walk in 23 at bats. She also led the offense with two hits. Logann Woodley led the Presidents in the field with 11 putouts, while Meghan Staab and Nicole Ashcraft each contributed a trio of their own.

With the bases loaded in the top of the first inning of game two, Taylor Andres singled down the right field line to bat in Rachel Marx. Shortly after, Woodley singled to left field to bring Figura home and put the Presidents up 2-0. The bottom of the first saw the Tomcats notch four runs to take a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the second inning, Marx scored once again, this time thanks to a double to left center hit by Abby Cunningham. The third inning was kept scoreless by both teams, but W&J captured a trio of runs in the top of the fourth. Following a triple to right field, Marx scored on an RBI ground out by Figura. Cunningham was next to make it home with a single up the middle by Emily Watson, who then scored when Woodley hit a double to right center. Thiel managed to tie the game up at 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Presidents tallied a run in the top of the sixth, with Watson being batted in on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Kochka. The Tomcats posted three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a short lead that the Presidents quickly tied in the top of the seventh when Marx and Staab scored on a two=run single by Figura.

The 9-9 score carried into extra innings, with W&J capturing the win when Woodley singled to left field and plated Watson in the top of the ninth inning.

Emily Watson was in the circle for eight of the nine innings in game two, throwing five strikeouts to pick up her first win this season and the 23rd of her career in the circle.

The Presidents will return home to take on Waynesburg tomorrow, April 30, at 11:00 am for the 2016 Senior Day doubleheader.
