Freshmen fuel W&J's 3-2 win at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Washington & Jefferson received all three goals from freshmen as the Presidents topped Wittenberg, 3-2, to open the 2016 season.

Trailing 1-0 after a Tigers' goal at the 19:45-mark, W&J's Judy Yurkofsky (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) answered just 2:46 later with the first score of her career, an unassisted tally at 22:31. The two teams played out the remainder of the opening 35 minutes at a 1-1 gridlock.

Yurkofsky needed just 1:02 into the second half, however, to give the Presidents their first lead of the game and season when she scored off a helper by Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Wittenberg, in turn, needed only 3:43 to knot the game once again at 2-2.

The decisive goal came at the 61:54-mark off the stick of Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) by way of an assist by Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi). It marked the first goal in the rookie's career and helped propel W&J to a 1-0 start to the season for the 10th-straight year.

For the day, the Presidents held a 11-9 advantage on shots, thanks to a 7-4 margin in the second half. Fromm tied for the game high with five shots (four on goal), while Yurkofsky added three and Steffey recorded a pair of shots.

Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) recorded three saves in the victory to improve her career mark to 5-1 overall.

The Presidents will play two nonconference games at Cameron Stadium this weekend, beginning with a 5 p.m. match-up against Shenandoah (Va.) on Saturday, Sept. 3.
