Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Presidents hold off late rally, beat Shenandoah 2-1

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) put the the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team ahead for good on Saturday, Sept. 3, as the team improved to 2-0 with a 2-1 win over Shenandoah (Va).

Buyan got the scoring started when she scored 13:33 into the game deflecting in a shot from senior Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi). Brown wound up from just left of the center of the box and fired a low, hard shot to the bottom left corner of the net. Buyan, who was camped right next to the goal, got her stick on the ball to redirect it away from the goalkeeper and into the cage.

Senior Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored just 7:42 into the second half after sophomore Laura O'Malley (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) gathered the loose ball and passed it off to Steffey to take a 2-0 lead. Steffey's shot came from about 15 yards out and was placed to the top left corner of the cage.

After being back on their heels for most of the first half, the Hornets found a rhythm and continued that momentum into the second half. Still down by two, the Hornets finally capitalized on one of their scoring chances when Sarah Reed was able to get an open shot in the middle of the box and finished to the lower left corner.

The Hornets kept on the attack for a majority of the remainder of the game, but the Presidents defensive effort was just as good. With about a minute left in the game, the Presidents defense cleared the ball down the field and the offense ran out the rest of the clock.

Junior Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) (2-0) earned the win for the Presidents, making two saves and knocking away several loose balls. Jessica Brown (1-1) took the loss for the Hornets, finishing with zero saves. Jenna Rampale played the second half in net for the Hornets and made one save.

As a team, the Presidents finished the game with six total shots, three on goal, and had five corner opportunities.

The Presidents get back on the field tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 4, as they will host Bridgewater (Va.) at 4 p.m. at Cameron Stadium.
