Yurkofsky scores twice in 3-1 win over Bridgewater

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Freshman Judy Yurkofsky (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) posted her second multi-goal game in four days with a pair of goals to lead the Presidents to a 3-1 win over Bridgewater (Va.) at Cameron Stadium.

The rookie opened the scoring just 12:14 into play when she deflected a shot by senior Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) in off of a penalty corner. Sophomore Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) expanded the lead to 2-0 at the 25:05-mark when she redirected a drive off the stick of classmate Laura O'Malley (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) for the eventual game-winner, her second score in as many days.

Just under five minutes into the second half, Yurkofsky gave the Presidents breathing room with an insurance goal. After freshman Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) was stonewalled by Bridgewater goalie Ali Bishop, Fromm was able to collect the rebound and push it to Yurkofsky, who finished the far post.

The Eagles got on the board with five minutes remaining when Tessa Tierson deflected in a long cross from Madison Clement, but W&J held on for the 3-1 victory, improving to 3-0 in the process for the second time in the last three seasons.

The Presidents led in shots, 11-7, thanks to a 7-1 advantage in the first half, while both teams took seven penalty corners in the match. Steffey and Yurkofsky led all players with three shots, while Buyan had two and Fromm the final one.

Junior Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) made four saves in cage to improve to 3-0 this season, while sophomore Claire Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) recorded a defensive save.

The Presidents will begin Empire 8 league play on Saturday, Sept. 10, with a 10 a.m. start against Elmira (N.Y.) at Cameron Stadium.
