W&J opens Empire 8 play with 6-0 win over Elmira

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Presidents got goals from five different players en route to a 6-0 victory over Elmira in the 2016 Empire 8 league opener.
 
The win moves the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team to 4-0 on the year, the best start since opening the 2011 campaign 5-0.
 
Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) needed just 3:04 to open the scoring with her third goal of the season after she collected a rebound in front of the cage and pushed it in.

 
Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) then added to the lead with a pair of unassisted goals less than four minutes apart at 19:12 and 23:02.




Judy Yurkofsky (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) then capped the first half scoring and sent W&J into halftime with a 4-0 lead with her fifth goal of the season.

 
In the second half, Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) extend the margin to 5-0 5:04 into play when she redirected a shot from Buyan in.

 
Kelly Knisel (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) concluded the scoring when she took a crossing pass from Michelle Yamamori (San Dimas, Calif./Bonita) and found the back of the cage, 6-0. It was the first career point for Yamamori.

 
For the game, W&J held a 38-6 advantage in shots, thanks to a 22-2 margin in the first half and 16-4 in the second. Steffey and Buyan both recorded 10 shots on the day, with seven and nine landing on goal, respectively.
 
Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) recorded the first shutout of her career in improving to 4-0 on the year and 8-1 in 13 career games. She made two saves in the process.
 
The Presidents return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 with a 12 p.m. Empire 8 match-up on the road at Nazareth.
