Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) scored twice as Washington & Jefferson moved to 2-0 in the Empire 8 with a 4-1 win at Nazareth.
The Presidents continue their unbeaten streak to open up the 2016 field hockey season, improving to 5-0 this year. Nazareth drops to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in Empire 8 contests.
Buyan scored the second and fourth goals of the match for the Presidents, with the second going in as the game-winner, and coming 16:43 in off a pass from
Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Her final goal came in the 61st minute and was assisted by
Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg), pushing the margin to 4-1.
Fromm needed just 5:27 to open the scoring and put the Presidents up 1-0.
Judy Yurkofsky (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) scored the final goal for W&J, which came at 47:41 and put W&J ahead by a 3-0 count.
For the game, the Presidents held a commanding 29-8 advantage in shots behind a 20-3 margin in the second half. Steffey led all players with nine shots, including six on goal, while Buyan and Yurkofsky each had four shots.
Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) made three saves in goal to improve to 5-0 on the year.
W&J returns home to Cameron Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 20 when it hosts Juniata at 7 p.m. in nonconference action.
