WASHINGTON, Pa. – Through more than 70 minutes of play, the Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team held a 1-0 lead over Marietta and appeared to be destined for a close finish in its season opener at Alexandre Stadium.
Â
With 18 minutes remaining in the game, junior
Jordan Toohey (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant/Saint Francis (Pa.)) found the back of the net off a feed from freshman
Chandler Marteeny (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) to take a 2-0 lead. 42 seconds later, Toohey scored again, this time from about 25 yards out to the right post to record her fifth career hat-trick. The goal was the 30th of her career, moving her past
Toni Lynn Simonini for fifth-place all-time.
Just under four minutes later, the Presidents tacked on their fourth goal of the game when junior
Tatiana Ruzzini (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) connected off-balanced off a deflected pass from senior
Mariah Lockard (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) to the bottom right corner of the goal. It marked the 21st tally of her time in Red & Black, moving her into a ninth-place tie on the W&J career goals list with
Samantha Hudson.
43 seconds later, sophomore
Sam Fields (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) let loose a high-arcing shot from 20 yards out to the top-left corner to give the Presidents a 5-0 lead. Junior
Josie Madden (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) capped off the scoring for the Presidents with a perfectly placed one-timer to the bottom left corner off a pass from Ruzzini deep in the Pioneer box to take a 6-0 lead.
Â
The first half was evenly matched on the scoreboard for much of the period as both teams were playing physically. After a couple of shots were turned away, Toohey got the Presidents on the board in the 43rd minute when sophomore
Brianna Floryshak (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) sent a long through-ball from the other side of midfield past the Pioneer defense. Toohey was able to stave off one defender and finished strong to the lower right corner.
Toohey put five shots on goal in the game while Madden, Fields and junior
Ashton Grimm (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville/Saint Francis (Pa.)), each had two shots on goal. Junior
Allison Rinehimer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) (1-0) earned the win for the Presidents without having to make any saves in 75:54 of action. Freshman
Beth Boyles (Dundee, Ohio/Hiland) finished the game in net for the Presidents and also did not need to make a save in 14:06 of her first collegiate game.
Â
The Presidents outshot the Pioneers 18-3 and held an advantage in shots on goal (14-0) and corner kicks (8-1).
Â
The Presidents return to action on Sunday, Sept. 4, when they host Pitt-Greensburg for a 3 p.m. start at Alexandre Stadium.
