Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Presidents score late, tie Mount Union 1-1

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Christian Payne (South Park, Pa./South Park) scored the lone goal for the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team in its home opener on Saturday, a 1-1 draw against Mount Union.

The Purple Raiders held a 1-0 lead with time winding down in the game. With 15 seconds left, Jason Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) took a free kick and sent the ball into the center of the box. The ball took one high bounce towards Payne, who skied for the header and was able to put it past the Purple Raider keeper with just 10 seconds left. The goal was Payne's second of the season and he has recorded at least one point in all three games thus far.

The game was scoreless for most of the game but, in the 82nd minute, the Purple Raiders broke through first when Jake Clark sent a pass into the middle for Johny Akindipe who fired the ball into the back of the net from 15 yards.

Nick Stasko (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) (1-1-1) took the draw in net for the Presidents in the 110 minutes of action while Dwight Donis (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) made a defensive save in the second half to keep the game scoreless at that point. Dylan Lias (1-2-1) took the draw for the Purple Raiders, making nine saves in 110 minutes.

Both teams were aggressive all game but the Presidents held a 5-0 advantage in shots in the second overtime period to finish the match with a 17-10 edge in total shots. Payne and Jason Menni (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) led the attack for the Presidents as they both got off five shots and three on goal.

The Presidents return to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when they host La Roche at 7 p.m.
