WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team improved to 2-1-1 on the season with a 2-0 win at home against La Roche on Wednesday night, Sept. 14.
With the Presidents maintaining a 1-0 lead late in the second half, both teams were playing very hard and very physically.
Jason Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) took a corner kick for the Presidents in the 85th minute and sent it to the center of the box. The ball then slipped through the hands of the keeper for a goal to seal the win.
Yobbi got the Presidents on the board in the 36th minute when he stepped up to take a free kick from just outside the box on the right side of the field. Yobbi sent in a line drive that passed through every body and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. The goals were Yobbi's first of the season and it was also his first career multi-goal game.
Justin Carter (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and
Christian Payne (South Park, Pa./South Park) were very aggressive on the offensive end as well, with both players tallying four shots and two on goal.
Nick Stasko (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) (2-1-1) not only earned the win in net for the Presidents, but recorded his first career shutout. Stasko didn't need to make any saves as the Presidents' defense did not allow a shot on goal. Austin Gorman (3-2) took the loss in net for the Redhawks, making eight saves in 90 minutes.
As a team, the Presidents held a 19-4 edge in total shots, putting 10 of those shots on goal.Â
The Presidents return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they host Frostburg State for a 2 p.m. nonconference matchup.
