W&J takes defending PAC champion Thomas More to brink, falls 3-2

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team snapped a 14-set losing streak to Thomas More, but was unable to close out a 2-1 lead in a 3-2 loss to the four-time defending Presidents' Athletic Conference champion Saints.

After dropping the first set, 25-21, W&J won the next two sets 26-24 and 25-19 to come within one set of upending the hosts. The Saints, however, we able to rally with a 25-16 win in the fourth set and 15-11 win in the decisive fifth set. The loss drops the Presidents to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the PAC this year. Meanwhile Thomas More is now 3-5 on the year and 1-0 in the conference.

Lexi Hilzendeger (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) led the team with a career- and match-high 15 kills, her third time in double digits this season. Her 15 kills helped her hitting percentage to be .317 for the match. Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) joined Hilzendeger in double figures with 10 kills on 26 attacks. The sophomore also recorded a pair of blocks.

Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) finished with nine kills and a .300 hitting percentage and also knocked down a match-best four blocks.

The setters, Emily Toy (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) and Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) turned in 24 and 17 assists, respectively, with O'Brien posting her first career double-double with 12 digs as well.

Allison Means (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville Area) finished with a team- and season-high 30 digs, moving into fourth place on the W&J career list with 1,328. She passes Stacie Ley (2003-06) who recorded 1,324 in her career. Means also led the Presidents with three service aces.

Taylor Freeman (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) added 20 digs, six kills and two services aces.

W&J will continue PAC action on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when it hosts Saint Vincent for a 7 p.m. match at the Henry Memorial Center.
