W&J offense comes alive with 4-1 win at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team snapped a two-match winless skid with a 4-1 win at Ohio Wesleyan.

The victory improves the Presidents to 3-1-1 on the year, while the Battling Bishops slip to 1-2-0.

Ashton Grimm (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville Area/St. Francis (Pa.)) scored a pair of goals, the first and fourth of the day for the Presidents, in the victory. She opened the scoring in the 24th minute when she finished a header off a corner kick by Josie Madden (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward).

Madden recorded the eventual game winner with 5:04 to play in the first half when she took a pass from Tatiana Ruzzini (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and knocked it in over the goalkeeper from 20 yards out.

Ohio Wesleyan cut the lead to 2-1 just 3:21 into the second half, but Ruzzini extended the margin back to two goals in the 75th minute she she followed her own shot and buried the rebound. Grimm capped the scoring with 1:37 left after a pass from Ruzzini left her open along the right side.

Behind identical 11 shot halves, the Presidents led the shot column, 22-9. Ruzzini and Jordan Toohey (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant/St. Francis (Pa.)) each recorded a match-high five shots and four on goal. Grimm and Madden both tallied four shots.

With her four points on the day, Ruzzini moved into a tie for the team lead with 10 points and also is now tied for eighth on the W&J career points list with Marcy Selestrow (57).

Beth Boyles (Dundee, Ohio/Hiland) earned her first career victory in her first collegiate start, playing the full 90 minutes and making one save.

The Presidents will travel to No. 6 Carnegie Mellon on Wednesday, Sept. 14 for a 7 p.m. match in Pittsburgh.
