Four-goal second half gives Presidents 5-0 win against Franciscan

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Four different Presidents found the back of the net in the second half as Washington & Jefferson improved to 3-2-1 on the season with a 5-0 nonconference win over Franciscan.

Christian Payne (South Park,  Pa./South Park) scored the first two goals of the day for the Presidents, upping his team-leading total to four through his first six collegiate matches. He lofted his first goal over the keeper inside the left post from just inside the goal box in the 20th minute to send W&J to a 1-0 halftime lead.

Just 5:10 into the second half, Payne scored again after taking a pass from Jason Menni (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) and finishing to the lower right 90. Menni also assisted on W&J's third goal when Justin Nolfi (Irwin, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) converted on a header to the far post off of Menni's corner kick in the 65th minute.

The Presidents would tack on the fourth goal 4:30 later, at 68:33, when Justin Carter (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) fired inside the left post from just outside of the 18-yard box. Aleksandr DeHaven (Tampa, Fla./Plant) added his first career score at 70:02, also just outside of the 18-yard box, but this one went inside the right post.

For the match, W&J held a commanding 30-7 advantage on shots thanks to 15 in each half. Payne recorded a match high seven shots, while Nolfi added five and Matt Kotkiewicz (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) posted four.

Jeremy Stone (Hope Mills, N.C./Fayetteville Academy) picked up his first career victory and shutout, making one save while playing all 90 minutes in goal.

The Presidents will hit the road for their next three matches, beginning with a nonconference tilt at Heidelberg on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 3 p.m.
