Presidents outlast Barons, 3-2

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team defeated Franciscan, 3-2, on Wednesday night, Sept. 21.

Jordan Toohey (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant/Saint Francis (Pa.)) scored in the 53rd minute of the game to give the Presidents a 3-0 lead thanks to a through ball from Megan Ochsenreiter (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler). After making a move past the last Baron defender, Toohey found room inside the right post for the score. The goal marked Toohey's third of the game, her sixth career hat trick.
In the seventh minute, Tatiana Ruzzini (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) sent a long pass through the defense towards Toohey. After taking a couple of touches, Toohey chipped the ball past the Barons' keeper and off the inside of the left post for the 1-0 lead, her sixth goal of the season.

Seven minutes later, Toohey scored again, this time receiving a lob pass from Josie Madden (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) which cleared the heads of the defense. Toohey tapped the ball to the right post in mid-air following one bounce to record her ninth career multi-goal game.

The Barons got on the board late with goals in the 73rd and 86th minutes from Corinne Jensen and Savannah Luebking, respectively, but the Presidents were able to control the ball on offense the rest of the way to close the game.

Allison Rinehimer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) (3-2-1) earned the win in net for the Presidents, playing the first half. Beth Boyles (Dundee, Ohio/Hiland) played the second half for the Presidents and recorded two saves. Courtney Finney (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) was able to to come up with a defensive save in the game as well for the Presidents. Sarah Luebking (3-4) played the first half for the Barons and made four saves while Jasmine Florentino played the second half and made five saves.

The Presidents held advantages in shots (30-8) and shots on goal (12-5) over the Barons. Toohey tallied a game-high 15 shots and put nine of them on goal.

W&J Women's Soccer returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 24, when they host Roanoke in a 2 p.m. nonconference matchup.
