ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team improved to 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in Empire 8 play with a 1-0 victory at Hartwick on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 24.
Despite the game remaining scoreless through 68 minutes, the Presidents had been in control of the game as they held an 18-2 edge in shots and a 10-2 edge in penalty corners. With just 75 seconds remaining in the game,
Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) was able to grab the ball after a pass was deflected off a defender and fired it into the cage for the game-winner.
Steffey finished the game with game-highs in shots (14) and shots on goal (10) while
Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi) finished with four shots, three on goal, and
Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) tallied three shots, two on goal.Â
Karlie Baran (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) (7-0) got the win in net for the Presidents and recorded her conference-leading third shutout of the season, making two saves in the game. Shannon Carter (6-2) took the loss in net for the Hawks, making 18 saves.
The Presidents return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 28, when they host Wooster in a 7 p.m. nonconference matchup.
