Presidents earn tri-match split

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team earned a tri-match split, outlasting Westminster, 3-2, in its first match but falling, 3-0, to Geneva in its second match.

W&J won the first and fourth sets in regular fashion by 25-18 and 25-19 margins, respectively. Westminster secured extra-point victories in the second and third sets, 27-25 and 26-24. The Presidents then held on in the fifth set to take home the match by way of a 17-15 win.

Lexi Hilzendeger (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) led four Presidents in double digits in kills with 15. Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) added 12 kills and six blocks, while Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) added 12 kills and three blocks and Taylor Freeman (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) turned in 11 kills and 21 digs.

Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) handed out a match- and career-best 31 assists, with Emily Toy (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) pitching in 28 assists.

Allison Means (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville Area) led all players with a season-high 38 digs. Katheryn Rotthoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) also reached double digits with 19 digs.

Against Geneva, the final set scores totaled 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 in favor of the Golden Tornadoes.

Hilzendeger led the Presidents in kills with 11 while Lydic posted six kills and a team-high .385 hitting percentage. 

O'Brien and Toy combined for 32 of the team's 33 assists in the second match with 16 apiece.

Means totaled a match-high 23 digs while Freeman and Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) both added 12.

The Presidents will get back on the court on Tuesday, Sept. 27, when they host Bethany (4 p.m.) and Muskingum (8 p.m.) in another tri-match.
