Presidents drop Bethany, fall to Muskingum to split tri-match

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team snapped a 13-match losing streak to Bethany with a 3-1 win to open the tri-match, marking its first win against the Bison since a 3-2 win on November 3, 2009, to improve to 5-2 in conference play as the final set scores against totaled 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19. In its second match, W&J fell to Muskingum, 3-1, to fall to 11-4 overall on the season as the final set scores totaled 25-14, 19-25, 19-25, 22-25.

Against Bethany, Lexi Hilzendeger (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) and Julia Bernesser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) led the Presidents' attack with 13 kills and 12 kills, respectively, with Hilzendeger totaling a .204 hitting percentage and a .233 hitting percentage for Bernesser. Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) contributed five kills with a .417 hitting percentage.

Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the Presidents with 23 assists while Emily Toy (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) finished with 19. Allison Means (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville Area) finished with a match-high 36 digs and Taylor Freeman (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) was able to record 19 digs.

The Presidents held a 54-51 edge in kills over the Bison and used a .366 team hitting percentage in the fourth set to seal the win.

Against the Muskies, Freeman led the Presidents with eight kills, while also contributing 13 digs, and a .250 hitting percentage. 

Toy led the Presidents with 22 assists while O'Brien came in with 16 and also totaled 13 digs. Means led the Presidents' defense with 20 digs.

The Presidents will return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 1, for a conference tri-match against Chatham (1 p.m.) and host Grove City (3 p.m.).
