Game One: W&J 3, Oberlin 2 - 25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-13
W&J escaped a 2-1 hole by winning the fourth set 25-19 and the decisive fifth set 15-13 in the 2016 season-opener. Offensively, four Presidents ended up with double-digit kills -
Brooke Lininger (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) led the way with 12, while
Madison Lydic (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) and
Julia Bernesser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) added 11 apiece and
Lexi Hilzendeger (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) notched 10.
Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and
Emily Toy (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) handed out 30 and 24 assists, respectively. On defense,
Allison Means (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville Area) led the way with 18 digs, while
Sarah Dindak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and
Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) both posted 15. Lydic paced the Presidents with five blocks and Eich added four of her own.
Game Two: Hiram 3, W&J 0 - 25-15, 25-16, 25-23
Hilzendeger (11) and Eich (8) contributed 19 of W&J's 28 kills against the Terriers. Toy registered a team-high 17 assists and Coughlin contributed nine. In the loss, Means tallied 22 digs and Coughlin notched 15.
Game Three: W&J 3, Chatham 0 - 25-10, 25-7, 25-17
A total of 17 Presidents appeared in a nonconference match-up against fellow Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Chatham. A quartet of Presidents all fired six kills apiece:
Lauren Frazetta (Sarver, Pa./Freeport), Hilzendeger, Eich and Lydic. O'Brien's 15 assists were a match high, as were Coughlin's three service aces. For the defensive side, 13 players had at least one dig, led by
Julia Galbraith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) and
Katheryn Rotthoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) who both turned in eight. Eich and
Morgan Jacques (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy) turned away three blocks apiece.
Game Four: W&J 3, La Roche 0 - 25-19, 25-11, 25-20
Lininger and Bernesser led the offensive attack with nine and eight kills, respectively. O'Brien posted 14 assists, while Toy tallied 12. Means (20) and
Taylor Freeman (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) (10) both reached double figures in digs. Eich had six blocks, while Lydic and Bernesser each collected three.
What's next: W&J will host Franciscan in nonconference action at the Henry Memorial Gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 5.
