WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team improved to 4-1 on the season with a 3-0 win in its home opener against Franciscan where the game score finals amounted to 25-16, 25-15, 25-11.
Sophomore
Abbey Eich (Greencastle, Pa./St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) and senior
Taylor Freeman (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) led the Presidents' offense with seven kills each with Eich coming away with a .438 hitting percentage and a .273 hitting percentage for Freeman. Freeman also played a big part on defense, finishing second on the team with 12 digs.
Senior
Allison Means (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville Area) led the Presidents with 22 digs and provided one kill in her only attack attempt. Freshman
Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the team with a game-high 18 assists while junior
Emily Toy (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) finished with 10 assists and led the team with three service aces.
The Presidents' effectiveness improved as the game went on, posting .149, .294 and .333 hitting percentages from sets one to three, respectively. As a team, the Presidents held an edge in kills (33-24) and out hit the Barons .232 to -.009.
The Presidents return to the court on Friday, Sept. 9, when they travel to Frostburg State (Md.) for a nonconference matchup starting at 7 p.m.
