Presidents suffer first loss of season in overtime, 2-1, to Frostburg

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team fell to 2-1 on the season, 2-1, in overtime on Wednesday night, Sept. 7 at Alexandre Stadium.

Junior Jordan Toohey (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant/Saint Francis (Pa.)) got the Presidents on the board first in the 18th minute. Following a corner kick from senior Mariah Lockard (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills), sophomore Nicole Walters (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) tried to head the ball but the shot was stopped by the keeper. Toohey was able to gather the loose rebound and tapped the ball into the net off a Bobcat defender for the 1-0 lead.

With time winding down in the game, Bobcats' Alyssa Malanik took a direct free kick from about 35 yards out. After passing over several Presidents and Bobcats trying to get a head on it, the ball bounced over junior goalkeeper Allison Rinehimer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area), off the right post and in to tie the game, 1-1, in the 83rd minute.

The Bobcats were able to stay aggressive in the first overtime and, in the fifth minute of the period, Caroline Lowery sent a long pass through the Presidents defense which found Brooke Shehade. Shehade took one touch and found room under Rinehimer's diving reach for the game-winner.

Rinehimer (2-1) took the loss for the Presidents, making two saves. Rhianna Lapen (1-1) got the win for the Bobcats after starting the second half and made two saves. Karen Belteton played the first half in net for the Bobcats and made one save.

The Bobcats held a 12-10 advantage in shots, 4-4 in shots on goal, including an 8-5 advantage in the second half and overtime.

The Presidents return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 10, when they travel to Wooster for a 2 p.m. nonconference matchup.
