WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson had the lead with 2:22 remaining, but a 9-2 run to close out the game gave Bethany a 79-73 Presidents' Athletic Conference win to knock W&J from the ranks of unbeaten in league play.
The loss drops the Presidents to 9-5 overall with a 6-1 mark in league action. W&J will now travel to Crestview Hills, Ky. for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off against No. 5-ranked, defending National Champion Thomas More. The Bison move even at 7-7 overall behind a 5-2 conference record.
W&J led by nine, 37-28, at halftime, thanks to a 22-7 second quarter. The second half belonged to the Bison, who outscored the Presidents, 51-36, over the final 20 minutes.
Sammie Weiss led all players with 23 points for Bethany, while Hayley Holenka added 20 and Kelsea Daughtery added 15.
Four Presidents reached double figures, with
Taylor Cortazzo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford),
Danni Medovich (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) and
Amirah Moore (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) each collecting a team-high 16 points. Moore also recorded a game-best seven assists, her fifth-straight game with at least five helpers.
Mya Gordon (Washington, Pa./Washington) also reached double digits with 12 points, plus a team-high seven boards.
W&J scored 25 points off of 21 Bethany turnovers, while committing just 10 turnovers.
