WASHINGTON, Pa. --
Jonathan DeVito (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) racked up a career-high 17 points on Wednesday night, Jan. 18, but it was not enough as the Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team was defeated by Waynesburg, 92-84, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
Leading by one point with 16:09 to play, DeVito helped fuel a 15-6 W&J run by scoring six points to give the Presidents a 10-point lead, their largest of the night. Waynesburg was able to counter, however, by scoring 14 unanswered to take a 67-63 lead. The Presidents were unable to fully recover from the run as Waynesburg pulled away by another four points over the final 9:54 of the game to yield the final margin.
After Waynesburg jumped out to a slight 12-9 lead to begin the game, the Presidents scored eight points in a row to regain a five point advantage. Both teams continued to battle throughout the first half with Waynesburg holding a slight 28-25 edge over the final 12 minutes of the first half, including an 8-2 run at the very end of the half, but the Presidents were able to maintain a 42-40 lead at halftime.
DeVito finished shooting 6-for-8 from the floor and nailed 4-of-6 three-point attempts.
Brian Lindquist (Narvon, Pa./Pequa Valley) scored a game-high 24 points, his second 20-point game in three games, and made 7-of-9 field goal attempts while being a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe. Lindquist also pulled in four rebounds and dished out four dimes.
Sean Stinelli (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) continued his hot shooting with a 17-point performance, making 3-of-6 long range attempts and hitting on his first five field goal attempts of the game. He also finished with a season-high six assists in addition to four rebounds and three steals.
Brian Graytok (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) was the fourth different President to score in double figures, finishing with 13 points, four rebounds and five assists.
In the first half, the Presidents shot 64 percent from the field (16-for-25) and finished the game with a field goal percentage of 56.9, the highest since the season opener at Denison (57.1) while connecting on a season-high 88.9 percent of their free throws (16-18), the team's highest since hitting 90.5 percent (19-of-21) against Waynesburg on Jan. 8, 2014 (min. 10 attempts). The 84 points scored were tied for the most in a game by the Presidents this season (Denison, Nov. 15). Both teams scored 34 points in the paint in the game while the Presidents held an 8-6 advantage in fast break points.
The Presidents will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Geneva for a 3 p.m. PAC showdown.
