WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team dropped its third-straight Presidents' Athletic Conference contest with a 69-64 home loss against Waynesburg.
The defeat drops the Presidents to 9-7 overall this season, behind a 6-3 mark in league action. The game signifies the end of the first trip through the league schedule and moves four teams (W&J, Waynesburg, Saint Vincent and Bethany) into a tie for second place in the conference.
Trailing, 65-64, with 30 seconds left after a layup by Waynesburg's Addy Knetzer, the Presidents missed a layup and were forced to foul. Both free throws were made and W&J called a timeout to advance to ball into the front court. W&J attempted a three-pointer to tie the game at 67-67, but the shot was blocked by the Yellow Jackets and a pair of free throws sealed the final margin.
Taylor Cortazzo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and
Amirah Moore (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) led three Presidents in double figures with 18 points apiece. Moore added a game-best seven assists and pulled in four rebounds.
Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) added 12 points and five boards.
W&J kicks off the second round of PAC play at Geneva on Saturday, Jan. 21 with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Beaver Falls, Pa.
