WASHINGTON, Pa. –
Sean Stinelli (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) set a new season high with 26 points on Wednesday night, Jan. 25, but it was not enough as the Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team was defeated by Saint Vincent, 76-60, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
After falling behind, 21-3, in the early going, the Presidents started to find their groove, scoring the next 11 of 19 points to cut into the Bearcat lead. Then, after a Saint Vincent layup, Stinelli single-handedly brought the Presidents back into the game, outscoring the Bearcats, 13-1, by himself over the next 2:36 as the Presidents trailed just 32-27. The Bearcats connected on a layup to close out the first half scoring.
In the second half, the Bearcats opened on a 17-8 run to take a 49-35 lead. But the Presidents kept fighting, scoring the next 10 points, six from Stinelli, to trail by just four points. After that, the Bearcats went on to outscore the Presidents, 27-15, over the final 9:48 of the game to yield the final margin.
Stinelli made 8-of-15 shots from the field and drained 7-of-11 from long range, tying his season high against Thomas More on Jan. 14 (7-for-12). He also pulled in five rebounds in the game.
Brian Lindquist (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while
Alex Richards (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) dished out a season-high six assists to lead the offense.
As a team, the Presidents connected on 6-of-11 three-pointers in the first half and finished the game with 10 triples, the fourth time this season hitting at least 10 and the third time in the last four games doing so. W&J also held an edge in fast break points for the game (6-4).
The Presidents will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 28, when they host Grove City on Alumni Day at 4 p.m.
