Strong first half helps W&J top Thiel, 83-56

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team defeated Thiel, 83-56, on Thursday night, Jan. 5, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

The Presidents and Tomcats were just about even through the first 2:21 of the game, with the Presidents holding a slight 7-6 edge, before W&J went on a 16-2 run over the next 5:27 to gain a 15-point advantage, led by Amirah Moore (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) who scored seven points during the stretch. After a Nicole Ricketts (Montgomery Village, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) layup put the Presidents ahead, 28-13, to end the first quarter, W&J scored the next 15 out of 18 points, seven from Danielle Parker (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), to build a commanding 43-16 lead with 4:15 left in the half. 

After a Tomcat three-pointer opened the second half scoring, Mia Woytovich (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) led an 18-5 run with six points and an assist to put W&J up 69-34 with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter. 

Thiel went on to outscore W&J 22-14 over the final 12:45 to yield the final margin.

Moore led the Presidents' offense with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field to go along with three rebounds, five assists and five steals. Parker finished right behind Moore with 13 points, shooting 6-for-11 from the field and pulling in eight rebounds, her sixth consecutive game with at least eight boards.

Alyssa Riley (North Ridge, Ohio/North Ridgeville) provided a spark off the Presidents' bench with nine points while nailing 3-of-5 shots from long range while also adding two assists and a steal.

In the first half, the Presidents shot 19-for-37 (.514) from the field and limited the Tomcats to just 9-for-30 (.300). For the game, the Presidents shot 46.3 percent from the field and owned respective plus-10 and plus-four rebound and turnover marks. The Presidents also held advantages in points in the paint (38-14), points off turnovers (29-15), second chance points (14-4) and fast break points (10-2).

The Presidents will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 7, when they travel to Chatham for a 1 p.m. PAC showdown.
