Presidents come from behind to beat Chatham, 82-74

PITTSBURGH -- Amirah Moore (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) finished just three assists short of a triple-double while leading the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team to comeback win at Chatham, 82-74, on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

Trailing by seven points early in the second half, the Presidents used an 8-2 run to cut their deficit to just one point with 5:44 to play in the third. Then, trailing by four with 1:22 to play in the third, the Presidents went on a 15-3 run, spanning into the fourth quarter, to take a 66-60 lead. After Chatham responded with six points to tie the game, the Presidents got hot once again, this time going on a 14-3 run spanning nearly three and a half out of the final four minutes of the game to take an 80-69 lead.

Both teams exchanged short runs throughout the first quarter, resulting in a 16-16 tie heading into the second. After the Cougars and Presidents were tied, 26-26, with 5:14 to go in the half, the Cougars went on a 15-5 run to build a ten point lead. The Presidents were able to respond by scoring the final five points of the half to close the gap, but still trailed 41-36 at the break.

Moore totaled 17 points in the game to go along with a career-high 12 rebounds, her first career double-digit rebound game. Moore also dished out seven assists in the game and blocked a shot. Mya Gordon (Washington, Pa./Washington) finished with a career-high 19 points, on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, pulled down 13 rebounds to record her second double-double of the season and came away with two steals and a block on defense.

Taylor Cortazzo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) also finished with 17 points, a season high, and made 6-of-9 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point land, while tying a season-high with three assists. Danni Medovich (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) scored a season-high 15 points and connected on 2-of-3 long distance shots. Mia Woytovich (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) rounded out the five Presidents in double figures as she scored a season-high 12 points to go along with four rebounds and a steal.

In the second half, the Presidents shot an even 50-percent from the field while limiting the Cougars to just 36.7-percent. For the game, the Presidents had a season best .475 field goal percentage, won the turnover battle (11-8) and scored more points off turnovers (12-8).

The Presidents will look to stay unbeaten in PAC play when they host Bethany on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m.
