W&J posts fourth straight shutout in 2-0 win over St. Mary's

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team recorded its fourth straight shutout in a 2-0 win over St. Mary's College (Md.) in nonconference action on Sunday, Oct. 1.

The Presidents improve to 5-3 overall on the season and have won four games in a row while the Seahawks fall to 6-6 this year.

Rachel Fromm (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) opened the scoring for the Presidents in the eighth minute when she received a crossing pass in front of the right post from Jenna Jaworski (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), allowing Fromm to finish from short range.

In the second half, Alana Boyd (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) doubled the W&J lead to two. Claire Shaak (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) dribbled around a defender on a penalty corner opportunity and found Boyd who struck the ball inside the left post for her fourth score of the season.

Boyd and Rachel Buyan (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) led the Presidents' attack with two shots each while Fromm, Jaworski, Shaak, Sofiya Bobrovnikova (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) and Gabby Karr (White Hall, Md./North Hartford) each tallied one shot in the game.

The shutout of the Seahawks was Karlie Baran's (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) fourth straight as she has now blanked five teams this season, all coming in the last six games. Baran's active scoreless streak now sits at 288:36.

As a team, W&J outshot St. Mary's 9-1 overall in the game and held a 4-0 edge in shots on goal.

The Presidents will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 4, for a nonconference road contest at Frostburg State beginning at 5:00 p.m.
