W&J's second half fury leads to 5-0 PAC win over Chatham

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Four second half goals gave the Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team a 5-0 win over Chatham on Wednesday, Oct. 11, in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

The Presidents improve to 6-5-1 overall and 1-2 against PAC counterparts as the Cougars fall to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in conference.

With a 1-0 lead to begin the second half, Josie Madden (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) widened the margin on a penalty kick in the 48th minute. Jordan Toohey (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant/Saint Francis (Pa.)) followed with her second goal of the game in the 73rd minute as Nicole Walters (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) put a free kick from near midfield into the goal box, which then bounced off the goalie's hands and was collected by Toohey for a shot.

In the 77th minute, Alexa Smith (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) scored her first collegiate goal when Jillian Bartman (Finleyville, Pa/Ringold) collected a corner cross at the far post and passed to Smith in front of the goal. Ashton Grimm (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville/Saint Francis (Pa.)) added the finishing touches as she fought the ball away from a defender in the offensive zone and sent a shot inside the right post.

Toohey got the scoring started in the fifth minute of the first half, as she accepted a pass from Tatiana Ruzzini (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) in the left side of the box, dribbled through two defenders and scored.

Allison Rinehimer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) earned her fifth win of the season and was not required to make any saves as her defense only allowed four total shots, with none finding the target.

Grimm led the team with six shots, as she put three on goal, including her score. Toohey added four more shots and two goals. Madden and Brianna Floryshak (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) rounded out the players with multiple shots, with two shots and one on target apiece. Five other Presidents recorded one shot to add to W&J's 19-4 shot advantage.

The Presidents will return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 4:30 p.m. as they travel to Geneva for a PAC showdown.
